Adapt and Survive- Why Adaptation is Sometimes Necessary
Programming
We've all been there. You're all set to enjoy a new movie based on a beloved book... but they've made changes to the original! Put your emotions aside, and join a discussion on why adaptation isn't a dirty word. We'll talk about some adaptations on the same level as their source material... and at least one that eclipsed it.
From Book To Screen: Turning your Book into a Screen Play
Programming
This panel features bestselling local author turned screenwriter Eric Buer, publishing attorney Dan Foutz of HarperCollins, and Anne Brooks MacDonald, a local bestselling author, publishing expert, and previous presenter at Pensacon. Together, they offer a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how stories can evolve beyond the book into screenplays and other formats, blending the author's creative journey with expert insight into publishing, rights, and intellectual property. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how writers can think beyond a single format, protect their work, and approach storytelling as long-term creative IP — while learning what actually changes when a story moves from page to screen.

Last Nerd Standing!

Each round begins with everyone in the audience standing, as questions are asked everyone yells out the answer at the same time, answer wrong and you sit down, answer right and keep going until there is no one else standing. New rounds begin after a winner is declared and at the end the winners of all the other rounds can compete in a final tournament for the ultimate prize (whatever that might be)!

- Meet at the designated Trinket Swap.
- Tables will be set up at the panel for trades prior to panel starting. Bring an item, take an item.
- Rules: Avoid trading actual shop items from the event, food, or anything expensive; the goal is unique, fun, small tokens.

As a child of the 1980s, I hid in the back of libraries playing D&D; I went to comic book shops to get comics and meet people who loved The Avengers too, and I geeked out at local conventions with other sci-fi nerds. However, I kept my nerdiness under the radar because it was "embarrassing" to be called a nerd. Now, I stand proudly as a "nerd." What changed? Why is it cool to be a nerd now? This panel will also allow the audience to participate and share their nerd journey.

The Other Side of the Sky

What does the night sky look like from the other side of the world? After traveling to Chile, this presentation showcases how the southern skies — regions never visible from the Gulf Coast — were mapped using just an iPhone and a compact digital telescope. Discover the constellations, stars, and celestial features that remain permanently hidden from our local horizon, and compare real-time sky charts showing what observers see in Chile versus what we see here at the same moment.

A trinket swap is a fun exchange of small items (like charms, crystals, buttons, or handmade tokens) where you bring a little treasure and trade it for someone else's, creating a joyful way to get new keepsakes.
How it will work:
- Bring a trinket to exchange. Bring a small, non-valuable item (handmade or store-bought) that fits in your hand, like a mini-figurine, unique button, small crystal, or charm.
- Meet at the designated Trinket Swap.
- Tables will be set up at the panel for trades prior to panel starting. Bring an item, take an item.
- Rules: Avoid trading actual shop items from the event, food, or anything expensive; the goal is unique, fun, small tokens.

Nerds: Are We Finally Cool?
3:00 PM – 3:50 PM
Wright Place - 2nd Floor - Room 4
Programming
As a child of the 1980s, I hid in the back of libraries playing D&D; I went to comic book shops to get comics and meet people who loved The Avengers too, and I geeked out at local conventions with other sci-fi nerds. However, I kept my nerdiness under the radar because it was "embarrassing" to be called a nerd. Now, I stand proudly as a "nerd." What changed? Why is it cool to be a nerd now? This panel will also allow the audience to participate and share their nerd journey.

1:00 PM – 1:50 PM
Wright Place - 2nd Floor - Room 4
Programming
In this practical, insider-driven workshop, Anne Brooks MacDonald, a local bestselling author, publishing professional, and returning Pensacon presenter, breaks down what it really takes to move from writing a manuscript to getting it published — whether as a book or a screenplay. Drawing on her experience as an acquisitions editor, book coach, and working author, Anne walks attendees through the modern publishing landscape, including traditional, hybrid, and independent paths, as well as how screenwriting fits into today's storytelling ecosystem. Attendees will learn how to position their work, avoid common pitfalls, understand rights and ownership, and determine the smartest next step for their project — leaving with clarity, confidence, and a realistic roadmap for turning their writing into a published work.
